Empty Bowls Participation Guidelines

All proceeds from the bowls sold at Empty Bowls will go directly to Feed716

In Western New York, 1 in 7 people struggle with hunger and there are nearly 6,000 homeless individuals.  By participating in Empty Bowls, you are helping an individual in need go to bed with a full stomach. Empty Bowls was designed to challenge community members to discuss social justice issues, such as hunger and homelessness, and their solutions through creative, artistic expression. It has been hosted by cities around the world and focuses on how communities can come together through education to explore creative ways to end hunger.

In the words of the Angie Thomas, “Art is activism.” Thank you again for your interest in participation in Empty Bowls and for bringing local social issues to light. Some of the social issues we would like to explore through art include:

  • Hunger and Food Insecurity
  • Poverty
  • Homelessness
  • Importance of Nutrition and Access to Healthy Foods

We would like to use this project to foster an open discussion about the social issues that affects so many people in our community and more than 40 million people in America. Over the years, we have been deeply touched by the sentiments and suggestions listed in the students participants artist statements.

We are excited to be able expand the works displayed to professional artists as well as students from around Western New York.

Bowl Submission Guidelines:

  1. Artist identifies a social issue and expresses it clearly in their artwork. Please be aware due to space limitations we cannot display works that do not relate to the social issues we are trying to shed light on for this event.
  2. All completed bowls should be dropped off with attached tags after January 25th and no later than February 8th to Feed716, located at 394 Hudson Street in Buffalo, NY.
