Empty Bowls Participation Guidelines

All proceeds from the bowls sold at Empty Bowls will go directly to Feed716

In Western New York, 1 in 7 people struggle with hunger and there are nearly 6,000 homeless individuals.  By participating in Empty Bowls, you are helping an individual in need go to bed with a full stomach. Empty Bowls was designed to challenge students to discuss social justice issues, such as hunger and homelessness, and their solutions through creative, artistic expression. It has been hosted by cities around the world and focuses on how communities can come together through education to explore creative ways to end hunger.

In the words of the great engineer and science guy, Bill Nye, “One of the duties of all of us-parents, scientists, everyone-is to help educate the next generation, so they can succeed in their lives and help make the world a better place.” Thank you again for your participation in Empty Bowls and for bringing local social issues to light in the classroom.

Examples of Social Issues:

  • Hunger and Food Insecurity
  • Poverty
  • Homelessness
  • Importance of Nutrition and Access to Healthy Foods

Please use this project to foster an open discussion with students about the proposed social issues listed above which effects more than 40 million people in America. Over the years, we have been deeply touched by the sentiments and suggestions listed in the participants’ artist statements. If your students need additional inspiration before writing their statement, advise them to ask themselves the following questions:

  • Think back to a time when you were really hungry. How long was that period of time? Did you know when you were going to eat next? How does that differ from people who do not have access to food?
  • Why is it important to eat healthy food?
  • Why do some people have access to food, while others do not?
  • What are some ways that we can help?
  • When someone uses the word hunger, what does that mean?

In the past, we have had teachers who had their students work in teams and individually, we will leave this at your discretion.

Bowl Submission Guidelines:

  1. Student identifies a social issue and expresses it clearly in their artwork. Please be aware due to space limitations we cannot display works that do not relate to the social issues we are trying to shed light on for this event.
